Couples often request sessions when the relationship is in crisis and that’s a good reason to choose therapy though I actively recommend attending before that point. Success for couples can mean repairing the relationship, resolving issues, improving communication or choosing to uncouple amicably. In my experience I have found that communication is the most helpful tool for couples and I use a theory called Transactional Analysis for this. I draw on examples that you bring to help apply this method to your communication with each other. I also draw on various relevant psychotherapy theories where appropriate such as attachment theory and developmental theory. Sometimes this can help couples to understand and adjust their expectations of each other.
